Homemade electrolyte drink with lemon and lime, sea salt, and optional coconut water.

Sometimes simple really is best. If you truly need to replenish your electrolytes—after sweating, exercise, heat, or another situation where you’ve lost fluids—this homemade electrolyte drink is an easy option that takes about a minute to make.

It starts with water, a pinch of high-quality salt, and a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime. You can also add a splash of coconut water for a little natural sweetness and additional electrolytes.

No complicated ingredients. No expensive packets. Just a refreshing, budget-friendly drink you can make with ingredients you may already have at home.

***All of my recipes are gluten-free, dairy-free, blood sugar-friendly, and gut-supportive. We are all different so you may need to make adjustments based on your body’s unique needs.***

❤️Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Super simple: You only need three basic ingredients, plus an optional splash of coconut water.
  • Ready in minutes: There’s no prep work or special equipment required.
  • Budget-friendly: It’s an inexpensive alternative to many bottled electrolyte drinks and packets.
  • Easy to customize: Use lemon, lime, or a combination of both.
  • Refreshing: Fresh citrus gives plain water a bright, crisp flavor without making the drink overly sweet.

🌿Why Your Body Loves This Recipe

  • Water supports hydration: Water provides the fluid your body needs for normal everyday functions.
  • Salt provides sodium: Sodium is an electrolyte that helps maintain fluid balance and is one of the electrolytes lost through sweat.
  • Citrus adds flavor and nutrients: Fresh lemon or lime adds a bright flavor along with a small amount of vitamin C and potassium.
  • Coconut water adds more electrolytes: If you choose to add it, coconut water naturally contains electrolytes, particularly potassium.
  • It’s intentionally simple: When you need fluids and electrolytes, you don’t necessarily need a long list of ingredients to make a refreshing drink at home.

Recipe at a Glance

Prep Time: 2 minutes

Cook Time: 0 minutes

Total Time: 2 minutes

Servings: 1

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces water
  • Pinch of high-quality salt
  • Squeeze of fresh lemon or lime, to taste
  • Splash of coconut water, optional
  • Ice, optional

Instructions:

  1. Pour 8 ounces of water into a glass.
  2. Add a small pinch of salt and stir until dissolved.
  3. Squeeze in fresh lemon or lime juice to taste.
  4. If desired, add a splash of coconut water.
  5. Add ice if you like it extra cold, stir, and enjoy.

Recipe Notes:

About the salt: You only need a pinch. The goal isn’t to make your water taste noticeably salty.

Lemon or lime: Either works beautifully, so use whichever you have on hand—or squeeze in a little of both.

Coconut water: This is completely optional. It adds a touch of natural sweetness along with additional electrolytes, including potassium.

When might an electrolyte drink be useful? Most people don’t need a special electrolyte drink every time they’re thirsty. Plain water is often perfectly adequate for everyday hydration. Electrolytes can become more useful when you’ve lost significant fluids and sodium through prolonged exercise or heavy sweating.

A quick health note: Electrolyte needs vary from person to person. Certain health conditions and medications can also affect how your body handles sodium, potassium, and fluids. If you’ve been given specific fluid or electrolyte recommendations by your healthcare provider, follow those recommendations rather than a general recipe.
